Similar to Porsche’s 911, Harley Davidson’s Sportster brand is so iconic, that the release of each edition carries an enormous weight – so no pressure for the 2023 model.

Since 1957, bikes flexing the Sportster name, from the XL to the XR-750, have been some of Harley’s most exciting and unique offerings. But while this new bike may wear the nameplate, it’s a different beast.

Out front, the fenderless oversized tyre set up gives a sly wink to the bobber, while down below, cast-aluminium five-spoke wheels give a modern take on a retro look.

With pushrods and open exhausts well in the rear view, the new engine had to be potent and stable enough – while meeting modern emissions standards. Harley’s solution? They took a 1252cc Revolution Max engine from the Pan America, and tuned it to be smooth at low speed, torquey where it counts, and pull hard up to 9500 RPM. Problem solved.

Matched to a six speed gearbox, the ergonomics will have you hugging that front wheel – primed position for slaying the corners. Industry legends Brembo supply your stopping power needs, with a single disc mounted to a four-piston 32 mm calliper.

In terms of electronics, the bike disregards its history and goes its own road. The Daymaker LED headlamp provides a new look front end, while the 4.0 inch TFT gauge is just as visually distinctive as it is useful.

Featuring selectable modes including Rain, Road, and Sport, there’s a choice to suit the road and/or your mood, while tech goodies such as cruise control are simple to activate, even in the thickest riding gloves.

While it may split the faithful, Harley has produced a beautifully designed, well-built cruiser that deserves to wear the Sportster badge – despite its new direction.
