Review: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

The tragic loss of the original Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman is felt throughout this sequel, and his beloved character T’Challa is paid tribute to in the initial sequences of the movie.

His mother, Queen Ramonda now rules Wakanda and looks to prevent sharing her nations valuable vibranium with the world. A far cry from what her son would have wanted. However, America has managed to get its hands on technology that can detect vibranium on the ocean floors. This new development brings to the surface another hidden kingdom: Talokan, led by the mysterious Namor – a merman with supernatural powers including the ability to fly with little wings on his feet. Namor then threatens Riri, the 19 year old MIT student who developed the vibranian detection device. Wakandan Princess Shuri is called upon to help stop this impending threat to Riri, as well as their small but powerful nation of Wakanda.

“Wakanda Forever” is a complex geopolitical and action-packed movie that delves into the history and Mayan culture of the Talokan people. The film can feel overly busy with many different issues, both political and cultural, being raised, mixed in with superheroes and catsuits thrown in for good measure.

While this sequel doesn’t quite live up to the original, the returning cast each receive important character development. The beautiful costuming and production design are enough to keep you intrigued and on the edge of your seat for most of the two hour and 41 minute running time.
