Zero Hero

Futuristic streetfighter: Zero’s SR-X marries high-tech thrills with cyberpunk style…

In the world of motorcycling, the SR-X concept is kind of like pairing a tuxedo with your favourite Timberlands. It’s familiar yet scary, but also intriguing.
Zero Motors have a rep for being cutting edge because they are all about the electrons, but recently, the California company has been upping their aesthetics prowess.
The SR-X may look like the Ducati SuperSport 950 with a hit of futurism, but in reality it echoes the 2016 Mono Racer from Huge Design – built around a Honda 1,000cc sportbike.
Zero went to Huge and let them tamper with their halo street bike, the SR/S – which was surprising because it already had the looks. Huge stripped the SR/S’s aero bodywork in exchange for a future-look that could well belong in any version of Blade Runner.
That bodywork surrounds the battery pack and flows beautifully over the top. Up top, the SR/S handlebars have been swapped for some racer clip-on bars while the rearview mirrors are replaced with a camera feed.
From the wide LED headlight that sends down a robotic stare, to the rear end’s roundish Ferrari light, this bike has more attitude than a teenager without internet.
With Zero’s ZF75-10 electric motor and high end ZF17.3 lithium-ion battery, the SR-X can easily unleash the angst. Built on an undiluted SR/S mechanical platform, it retains its stock suspension, brakes and electric drivetrain that brings an impressive 140 pound feet of torque.
Range from the 17.3kW battery is about 160 km depending on your cargo load and throttle play, while top speed is electronically muffled to 217 km/h.
Something between a streetfighter and track bike, the SR-X is an attempt to define a new high performance sub-category. Zero isn’t just here to make bikes; moreso a biking revolution – one volt at a time.
