The journey behind social media model, trauma survivor and mental health advocate BELLA BLISS and why she believes it’s important to always keep it real…

Hello, Bella, cool and quirky photo shoot. Tells us about it.
I loved that this photo shoot took me out of my comfort zone. I almost fell multiple times but despite the struggle to pose in skates I managed to master it. It’s by far one of my most fun shoots I’ve done.

You look great. When do you feel sexy?
I feel sexiest, natural. I’m talking no make-up, hair in a bun, T-shirt on – just natural. When I was younger I looked for all these things to make me prettier but as I’ve grown I’ve learned self-love. Women need to learn to love their natural selves. Once they can do this, they will feel sexy.

What is your best asset?
I’ve been told that I can light up a room with my smile.

Tell us a little more about yourself.
I grew up in Florida, U.S.A. and I would like to point out that I love that my town is so supportive of me through this journey – they know my true story. A few years back I was in an abusive relationship. I went from facing judgment and ridicule, from a story about me that was not told truthfully, to winning and being a spokesperson for ACT – a non-profit organisation for abused and battered women. I also had a more challenging childhood. I’ve battled PTSD and my mental health to become who I am today. You can be a victim of trauma, or a survivor. I am a Survivor.

You go, girl! What would people be most surprised to know about you?
I have flaws and insecurities that I battle with every day in this industry. The need to be “perfect” and not slip-up can be nerve wracking. As a model, you are put on a pedestal and expected to be a certain way. This is why mental health and self-awareness is a must for anyone striving to be more and pursue their goals.

Your Instagram profile quotes, “I’m the girl you either envy or love”. Please explain.
I’m basically saying that I don’t care what people think. Being in this industry I’ve lost friends out of jealousy. There is a lot of “talk” in this industry behind the scenes versus how I am – very upfront with no filter. I’ve found that’s it’s more important to surround yourself with people who lift you up and bring out the best in you, even if that circle of people is small. So, you can love me or hate me – I am myself.

What do you dislike about social media?
I hate the fake persona people put on. You have people all competing to look the coolest, when in reality those who have success don’t show it. You have girls using filters to deceive people. You have men posing a lifestyle that isn’t real. You have people paying for likes/followers and probably trying to sell you something. It’s all fake! I hate it! Just be real – nobody cares anyway.

What message do you have for the haters and social media trolls you’ve had to endure?
I believe that when you have haters, you know you’re doing something right. But if they focused on themselves and their goals instead of focusing on my life, then they can get to where they want to be and probably happier, too. I got here because I ignored it, but haters online are “loud” so, in a way, they made me famous. I love my haters. You guys keep me going in life.

What do you look for in a man?
I look for a man who is honest. You can’t have a relationship without trust and honesty.

What have you learned about men over the years?
I have learned that all men are like dogs. All you have to do is feed them and rub their belly. Do that every day for the rest of your life and they stay loyal.

What’s one thing men should always know about women?
If a women is truly loyal, then money won’t impress her. Your faith, character, honestly and purity are more meaningful to any good woman than anything else you could offer her. Our culture might make you feel like good guys come out last, but it’s those good guys who we women want to spend the rest of our lives with.

What’s next for you?
I have a major project I’m working on in the next year. I’m excited for everyone to see the end result, but until then, my lips are sealed. ■
