With the launch of their Sportster S, Harley Davidson managed to appeal to different generations of riders. While the new Nightster draws its inspiration from classic V-twins, at it’s core it’s all-new. For those who wanted more modernity, they got it – and for those that asked for more performance, they got bucket loads.

Like the Pan America, at the heart is the new Revolution Max 975T engine which features VVT, power modes, and a tuned airbox. As a quick revving unit, the low-end grunt is always there, but instead of slamming into the rev-limiter at 5,000rpm, it powers on until it reaches red-line.

The fuel tank is an authentic 11.7 litre, although not where you think it is. The ‘peanut’ style tank only covers up the tuned airbox, the actual fuel cell resides under your arse and gets a 240 km range.
Showa provides the suspension at both ends, while braking is provided by Brembo, and for the most part, just one or two fingers working the front brake is all it takes to satisfy.

Featuring tech that put it over today’s current lot of cooled Harley V-twins, the bike comes equipped with a Drag-Torque Slip Control System, which smoothes out downshifts at speed. The handling on the twisties is something else too, elevating it from attention-seeking show pony to capable road machine.

The bike also features selectable riding modes – Road, Sport, and Rain – featuring their own settings for the engine power delivery, engine braking, and ABS. Innovations such as these are needed if new models are to live up to the cult 883 Sportster. The Nightster is definitely a contender, a well rounded warrior with old school HD looks, and more than capable of taking it to the competition – or its fellow models.
