Detoxify Now

With the silly season’s end imminent you should be thinking about getting your body back to its healthiest best. Why not start with a detox? It may be the best New Year resolution you’ve ever had. Leading medical doctor and detox expert, Dr SANDRA CABOT, reveals five top reasons why you should detoxify your rig now…

Excess sugar, alcohol and carbs have a direct effect on your hormones, causing testosterone to plummet. This often leads to lower sex drive and erectile dysfunction, reduced muscle strength and stamina, and lower mood. A detox is the best thing you can do for your hormones – it will clear the way for healthy hormone production, optimal testosterone levels and a better sex life.

Excess sugar and processed foods often cause mood changes and fluctuating energy levels. If you eat a lot of carbs early in the day, you’re more likely to crash at 3pm, impairing your mental focus. Low testosterone levels cause mental fatigue, too. If you have a toxic bowel it will expose your brain to toxins. Leaky gut syndrome is a condition where the lining of the intestinal tract becomes excessively permeable, allowing waste, incompletely digested food, heavy metals, yeast, bacterial toxins and other harmful substances to cross through the gut lining, into the bloodstream and thence to the brain. And if you have an excess of bad bacteria in your gut, they secrete toxins that can enter your bloodstream and pass through your blood brain barrier, getting into your brain and causing inflammation, which causes “foggy brain syndrome”. That’s no way to kick goals at work.

The main job of your liver is to cleanse and filter your bloodstream. A sluggish liver can’t do this effectively, which means toxins accumulate and hamper energy production. If you’re feeling tired, there’s zero chance you’ll be at your physical best — even if you’re exercising regularly. A cleanse can get you back on track to clearing away these toxins, helping to boost overall fitness and performance.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine there is a direct connection between emotions and the liver. When the liver is hot, we can become fiery, irritable and even very angry. When the liver is settled, we are calm and collected. An overworked liver is an overheated liver. If you notice you suddenly become extremely moody and tense for no particular reason, this could be an indicator that your liver needs the TLC a cleanse can deliver.

Your liver is the main fat burning organ in your body, and if it works efficiently, you’ll find it easier to maintain a healthy weight, burn fat and lose weight, if you need to. It’s also important to note that fat cells contain an enzyme called aromatase, which converts testosterone into female hormones (oestrogens). Oestrogens promote the growth of fatty tissue in the breasts and hips. The more fat cells a man has, the more oestrogen his body produces. The liver is supposed to break down oestrogen, but if the liver is sluggish or fatty, it will do a poor job and oestrogen will rise. Men with higher oestrogen find it hard to lose fat and fluid from their body and may grow breasts. A good cleanse will also improve liver and kidney function and reduce puffiness in the face (eyes and cheeks) due to fluid retention and toxin build up. It will also keep your eyes bright, skin clearer and reduce the incidence of pimples, acne, rosacea and brown spots on the skin.
